Description
Our client, a Midwest regional retailer with 3500+ associates is seeking a retail buyer for its next chapter of growth and development. Incumbent has been promoted. (headquarters and multi state/multi site locations)
The charter of this function is: To provide effective buying, marketing and merchandising skills. The function will present both a strategic and tactical role.
Responsibilities will encompass a complete beginning to end buying function.
Product Assortment includes: Pet Care, Feed, Animal Health, Horse Care and Tack. Categories are poised for growth.
Coordinates and develops an Assistant Buyer.
Reporting to the Divisional Merchandise Manager who oversees: Farm Parts, Supplies and Equipment; Outdoor Power; Lawn and Garden; Candy, Beverage and Snacks.
The day-to-day responsibilities of the position include:
Develops a comprehensive strategic business plan for categories, aimed at increasing market share while maximizing the contribution made by categories. Develops budgets and marketing plans.
Takes responsibility for the financial performance of each category as it relates to budgeted sales, gross margin, and inventory turnover. Prepares and presents quarterly and annual financial reviews. Initiates SKU rationalization in all categories.
Negotiates with domestic and international vendors on all aspects of merchandising program including price, packaging, logistics, terms, EDI related issues, marketing support funds, new store discounts, special buys, and more.
Determines regional assortments, price, and other market needs.
Establishes and maintains effective communication with management, stores, and the vendor community. Develops and oversees training seminars and special events.
Plans the marketing of products within each category aimed at driving sales, attracting core customers, and supporting the vendor partners.
Advertising and Multi Media Plans and layouts. Responsive to advertising schedules and guidelines.
Visits company stores and competition in various markets.
Attends trade shows, conventions, and vendor factory tours as necessary to evaluate current assortment and insure clientˇ¦s position.

Qualifications
5-10 years of experience gained through increasingly responsible positions within buying and merchandising. Pet and Animal Care Products are highly preferred. Other Bulk Food, OTC Healthcare or Soft lines buying experience will be considered. Must possess a hands-on involved work style.
A Bachelor's degree is preferred.
The ideal candidate will come from a multi unit retailer of at least 15 locations. Previous volume levels of responsibility should range $25mil to$75mil

Strong knowledge in consumer trends, marketing trends and profit margins.
Understands the financials inclusive of sales, margin, and inventory management.
Ability to visualize merchandise with the end customer in mind. Analyze and develop new programs.
Experience in space planning and floor plans. Plan-o-gram sets, replenishment process, and negotiations with multiple vendors.
Promotion of new product lines and items. Experience in developing multiple media advertising plans and layouts.
Ability to articulate strategy and results to all levels of the organization.
Ability to work independently, positively handles conflict, and work in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to manipulate data to drive and expedite project analyses and completion.
Strong and demonstrated analytical, communication and presentation skills.
Display a detail oriented approach to daily activities and a self-starter attitude.
